Liverpool 2 – 0 Atletico Madrid: Liverpool off to Champions League 16

It took less than 13 minutes for Liverpool to open the score against Atletico Madrid on Anfield in the Wednesday’s round of Champions League matches. A quick attack led by Trent Alexander-Arnold finished with a goal by Diogo Jota and Liverpool were sitting pretty right off the gate. Same story in the 22nd minute, only this time Mane helped the ball in the back of Atletico’s goal. This rounded up the final 2-0 score for Liverpool and with this victory the Reds climbed at the top of Group B and secured their spot in the final 16 of the tournament.

The usual display of lack of discipline from the Diego Simeone’s men saw Felipe get the red card in the 36th minute, following a foul on Mane. After some dissent from the centre back – ref Danny Makkelie pulled the red from pocket and Atletico had to finish the game even further disadvantaged, one man down.

While most of the notable action happened in the first half of the game, there was plenty to enjoy in the second part of the match, too. A Jota goal was overruled by VAR only three minutes into the second half. But fate made it fair by delivering the same blow to Atletico Madrid: in the 57th a goal by Suarez was also cancelled after VAR review.

Overall, a toothless performance by the Spanish club, while Liverpool continued its winning streak in Europe. With further European football secured, Liverpool can now easily rest and focus on domestic football.
